The World Looks Red

Again with the post-punk! Again with the trilogies! If you enjoyed listening to “Cut The Lights” and “Blackout/Whiteout” on your Walkman while smoking clove cigarettes waiting in line for the midnight showing of “Urgh! A Music War” at the New Varsity or the Nuart, you’ll probably like this one too.

Shiver 3

The third installment of “Shiver” sounds, I think, more like #1 than #2 … it’s going for a lovely, happy, swirly sound, but still with enough melancholy and dissonance mixed in to keep it from turning saccharine. “Bittersweet”, to coin a phrase. I think it’s quite tasty, and may all your shivers be joyful ones.’

1983-84

Another in the series of personal-nostalgia mixes (see also 1983 and 80-82.). This is music I first heard during the 1983-84 school year, my sophomore year at Caltech — music I still like and have strong memories of.

Yarnbomb

Happy Fun Summer Mix 2011! Originally a present for three friends with May birthdays, it’s now open to all. I’m very happy with how it turned out – from chiptunes to synthpop to techno to shoegazer to rock, it’s got a nice vibe.

String Theory

All guitar: mostly solo, mostly acoustic. Folk (both straight and freak), classical, blues, rock, and some that’s just undefinable.

¡Sabrosa!

This is a mixtape I made for my kid sister Karen way back when. In August 2010 I rounded up MP3s of all the tracks (except the Värttina song, which I couldn’t find) and re-mixed them digitally, adding some segues. It’s still a fun mix.

Charter Magic

This one’s working title was “Twee”, for reasons known only to members of the old 4AD-L. While it’s anything but sickly-sweet, it is overall girlish (or womanly), sometimes toylike, sometimes devouring or devoured. Music for your restless Anima. (Don’t let the first 90 seconds fool you.)

Ground Hum

The long-threatened experimental/metal mix. From buzzing drones to sludgy riffs to full-on screaming. Don’t be afraid, it’s only a recording.

2009 (Dome)

This is some of the best music I discovered in 2009; and this time, most of it was actually released in 2009 (the rest is 2008, I think.) Contents: ambient-experimental-neoclassical-drone-metal. This mix has been specially optimized for repeat-play.
